“4 Oaks Roofing & Facades Ltd was established as a company in Horsham, West Sussex in the UK in the year 1983 with the acquisition of a building known as The Forum. The name of the building is attributed to a character that goes by the same name which was a cattle ranch. The Forum was sold to John Paul Jones and his son Michael became the sole proprietor of the site later that year. It was at this point, that Michael took the idea of selling and developing commercial roofing products for residential and commercial uses and applied for a grant from the Building Licensing Agency called the ‘National Roofing Grant’ that enabled him and his business team to set up shop at The Forum.
“4 Oaks Roofing & Facades Ltd was set up as a limited company under the Trade Marks Act of 1980 with John Paul Jones as its sole director and shareholder. Under the Companies Act the company is obliged to manufacture and supply the goods or services and the directors must also be members of the Council of Trade Accreditation which is an independent body that licenses companies based on its merits. Its decision is binding on all licensed companies” said Martin Whittaker who is now a Chartered Surveyor in the Association of Chartered Surveyors in the UK you can check here.
In the following years John Paul Jones & son Michael took over the running of the company from its sole director and shareholder. A few years after that, Michael decided to expand their business and decided to take the name of ‘4 Oaks’ to represent their product. At first the company only focused on two projects, the first being The Forum in Horsham. “They were looking for something unique to put on the roof of the Forum”, said Whittaker. “They wanted a clear sign that advertised 4 Oaks Cladding” said Martin Whittaker. “A few years later when they had finished their project they had no roof to show and were looking for a sponsor”.
When they started their business they had no employees and no capital. They were funded by private investors and within a few months they already had three employees. This was very good news as Whittaker had been performing roofing work for thirty years and needed very little help. Martin was already making good sales from the work he did as a roofing contractor for other clients. This was how the company got started.
In the last year four Oaks Roofing employees left the company. One of them is now working full-time for the company and another has quit his job. Martin Whittaker says “The main thing that has changed is the weather in London. It’s got more rain here recently, so we have had to change our plans”.
